Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition for the 2008–2009 school year is $12,350.

Financial Aid

The John Carroll School is committed to maintaining a diverse student population. In striving to do so, we offer financial assistance and scholarship programs. Financial aid is available for all students and is based on documented need. A family’s need for financial aid is determined each year by John Carroll’s Financial Aid Committee. Decisions are based on information supplied to the Committee by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Parent Financial Aid Statement (PFS) Form should be completed and sent to the address in Pittsburgh, PA. The PFS Form is used to determine financial aid awards, Sisters of St. Joseph Grants and Work-Study jobs, Archdiocesan Teacher Discounts and Multi-Child Family Discounts. Further information regarding the School and Student Service for Financial Aid can be found on their website www.nais.org/financialaid/sss. You may also electronically file your PFS through this website.

A deadline of January 15, 2008 applies to incoming freshmen families applying for financial aid, allowing them to receive a response by early March. Upper-class families with renewal awards have a deadline of March 1, 2008 and their responses will be mailed in early May. Copies of 1040 and W2 Forms, or another comparable verification of family income must confirm all applications by May 1, 2008.

Parents who wish to apply for financial aid should request the PFS form from the Admissions Office in early December. Parent Financial Statement reports received late will not be considered until the middle of summer.

Financial aid is awarded annually, and is based on the availability of funds. Ordinarily, no financial aid of scholarship package shall exceed one half tuition. A family must submit a Parent Financial Statement Form every year to be considered for the renewal of financial assistance.

Types of Financial Assistance

Financial Aid Grants

are awarded annually and are deducted from the tuition invoice each semester (60/40). Grants will cover only a portion of the tuition. No student will receive a full tuition grant. As many as 200 students per year have received financial aid grants.

Student Work Program

is designed to offer students the opportunity to work at John Carroll during summer months and after school hours. Students are paid minimum wage and must be at least 14 years of age. Selection for the program is based on need. Over 40 students participate annually.

Sisters of Saint Joseph Grants

offer assistance to Catholic children in over 20 parishes of the John Carroll community. These grants are financially need-based awards. Pastors nominate students from their parish who they believe have a strong desire to attend John Carroll, but, to the best of their knowledge, do not have financial means to do so. While nominations that take the form of a positive recommendation are welcome, families should know that financial need factors dominate any consideration of merit. Students and parents are encouraged to contact their pastor for nomination. Nominations from pastors should be sent to John Carroll’s Financial Aid Committee and received by January 15, 2008. Nominated students must complete the PFS Form and mail to Pittsburgh, PA by January 14, 2008. Notification letters will be mailed in mid-March. Up to 40 students have Sisters of Saint Joseph Grants at any given time.

The Archdiocesan Teacher Discount Plan

provides families with one or more parent working full-time as an Archdiocese of Baltimore faculty member, a maximum of 50% reduction in tuition and is based on the financial need of the family. Applicants must complete the PFS form or they will not be eligible for the discount. Forms must be submitted to Princeton, NJ no later than January 15, 2008. Application forms are available in the Admission Offices.

The Multi-Child Family Discount Plan

provides families who have more than one child enrolled at John Carroll a reduction in tuition based on the financial need of the family. The second child may receive $500 off tuition; the third child would receive $1,000 off of tuition and so forth. Applicants must complete the PFS form or they will not be eligible for the discount. Forms must be submitted to Princeton, NJ, no later than January 15, 2008. Application forms are available in the Admissions Office.
