Selection Process
At the end of the sophomore and junior year students with a cumulative QPA of 35 or above will become eligible for membership consideration. Those students who meet the required QPA must have attended The John Carroll School, Inc. for at least one semester. The QPA is verified using the Power Grade grading system.
Students who meet the cumulative QPA will be notified after September 1 of their eligibility year. A Student Activity Information Packet will be distributed to eligible students after the first week of September.
Students who qualify academically must also have successfully completed 30 of the required service hours for the school service hour requirement by September 1 of their eligibility year.
The student may not have missed more than 5 days of school unless there are unusual circumstances. The student may not have been late to school more than 5 times.
Students who qualify academically and have the required number of service hours must also demonstrate outstanding qualities in areas of leadership and character.
Eligible candidates complete the Student Activity Information Packet in which they list their involvement in school and community activities as well as leadership positions held within school and community organizations. Students and parents must sign verifying that the information in the packet is complete and accurate.
Candidates are required to submit 9 evaluation cards to 9 different and current John Carroll School faculty or staff members. These cards are to show evidence of participation of in activities (2), evidence of leadership (2), and evidence of character (5).
All evaluation cards are to be returned directly to the moderators by the faculty/staff member by the due date or they will not be considered.
All candidates wishing to continue the selection process must personally return the Students Activity Information Packets to the NHS moderators by the specified due date. Those packets not returned by the deadline will not be considered, and the student will no longer be considered a candidate for NHS membership. (Double check the entire packet for completeness before submitting; packets will not be returned. Make a copy for your files; packets are not returned.)
Participation points are awarded for each school and community activity the student has been involved in since the beginning of the freshman year. Students can earn one point for each year of participation in each activity. Students also earn one point for each office or position of leadership held within the organization. Students may earn a maximum of 40 points for school and community involvement. The average of the two leadership and two activity ratings on the adult evaluations are tallied and divided by two. The total may not exceed 10 points.
The average of the five character ratings on the adult evaluations are tallied and divided by five. The total may not exceed 10 points.
All points are tallied to determine total points for each candidate.
All candidates are ranked based on their point total. The candidate with the highest total is ranked first; the second highest point total is ranked second and so forth until all eligible candidates have been ranked. Juniors and seniors are ranked idependently of one another.
The five member Faculty Council reviews the ranked point totals and all individual Student Activity Information Packets. Each member of the Faculty Council votes individually for each candidate. Candidates receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council will be inducted into The John Carroll School, Inc. Chapter of the NHS. There is no set number of candidates who will be selected.
The five Faculty Council members are appointed annually by the principal. The names of the Faculty Council remain confidential. The National Honor Society advisor (s) is/are non-voting member (s) of the selection meeting who work(s) with the Faculty Council. The advisor (s) is there to ensure that the process runs according to the established guidelines and to answer any procedural questions of the Faculty Council.
