Research Databases
Faculty and Students: A Username and Password must be supplied to access the following research databases from home. Please see a librarian at the John Carroll Library Media Center for this information.
Info Trac — Student Resource Center provides access to 1.7 million full-text newspaper and magazine articles (periodicals) updated daily. It also contains primary sources, original reference, overviews, critical essays, biographies, audio and video clips, links to health web sites and more.
Grolier Online — Grolier contains the entire text of Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Americana, Cumbre en Linea, American the Beautiful, and Lands and People. One search provides three types of results—Encyclopedia entries, links to recommended web sites, and related periodical articles from recognized sources. An excellent source for background information, basic facts, maps, biographies, images and links to authoritative web sites and related periodical articles.
- Cumbre en Linea (Spanish Encyclopedia) A comprehensive encyclopedia for Spanish speakers and Spanish language students.
- Lands and Peoples An encyclopedia of countries, cultures, and current worldwide events. Includes an electronic atlas, maps, pictures, and weblinks.
- America the Beautiful A state-by-state guide to America’s history and current events. Includes an almanac, time lines, and biographies of significant Americans.
SIRS Online — Provides thousands of full-text articles from more than 1,500 domestic and international sources exploring social, scientific, health, historic, economic, business, political and global issues. An excellent source for in-depth scholarly research.

NetTrekker — NetTrekker is a subscription search engine created especially for education. Unlike the free-web (Yahoo!, Google, etc.) NetTrekker contains pre-evaluated web sites (reviewed by humans instead of a computer program) and many search options excellent for use with and by students. Click on the register link to create your personal account and choose John Carroll from the drop-down list.
UnitedStreaming— United Streaming is an on-demand, searchable database of educational videos you can download or stream online. Click on the link to register and enter the JC passcode when prompted to create a personal account.
Oxford African American Studies Center (AASC)—The AASC provides online access to reference resources in African American studies. AASC features the new Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895, Black Women in America, and the Africana, a five-volume history of the African and African American experience. The Center also includes content from the African American National Biography project and the Encyclopedia of African American Art and Architecture. AASC also offers other resources from Oxford's reference program, including the Concise Oxford Companion to African American Literature and selected articles from other reference works.
Grove Music Online— The Grove Music Online database is a music resource on the web that includes the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.
Grove Art Online— The Grove Art Online database provides the most comprehensive online reference resource for all aspects of the visual arts worldwide from prehistory to the present day.
World and I School— WorldandISchool.com is an interdisciplinary resource that encompasses a broad range of articles by scholars and experts, all aligned to each state's standards for Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science. Originally published in print as The World & I, our site includes the complete contents since 1986 and continues to publish a new issue online each month. Among our features:
- The Social Studies page presents over 400 Special Reports encompassing 2,000 articles on U.S. Foreign Policy, Civics & Government, U.S. and World History, Sociology, as well as a number of Special Collections, such as the U.S. Constitution, Worldwide Folktales, Fathers of Faith, Shedding Light on Islam, and Profiles in Character.
- The Language Arts page features a Book Review Archive, Speech & Debate resources supporting the NFL's Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debates, and Special Collections such as Media in Review, Writers and Writing, Point-Counterpoint, and Poetry.
- The Science page provides highly respected collections on Scientists: Past & Present, Genes and Biotechnology, Impacts, and the vast World of Nature, as well as Special Reports in the areas of Biology, Environmental Science, Technology, and General Science.
- The Arts page displays an array of more than 1,000 articles reviewing the creative output of artists and performers in the areas of Music, Art, Dance, Theater, Architecture, and Craft & Design.
- The Spanish Program presents articles on Latin American culture in Spanish each week with audio clips and exercises for Reading Comprehension, as well as Vocabulary, Idioms, Phrasal Verbs, and a comprehensive Basics section for beginners. We also provide cultural studies of Latin American countries in English published over the years.
- The weekly ESL Program follows the same format as the Spanish page, with texts addressing various aspects of American daily life, and audio clips by professionals who perfectly match the tempo students require for pronunciation.
