Announcing the Class of 2023 Black & Gold Award Winners!
The winners of the Black & Gold Awards for the Class of 2023 were announced at the Senior Awards Ceremony on May 19. Congratulations to this year's winners, Anna Deaver and Ryan Skandalis!

The most prestigious award issued to one male and one female graduating Senior, the Black & Gold Award recognizes students who are consistently compelling in their accomplishments; thoughtful and considerate toward others; and uncompromising in their commitment to being a model of excellence and force for good in and out of school. Anna and Ryan, you truly embody what it means to be a Patriot and we are so proud of all you have accomplished.
About Anna Deaver & Ryan Skandalis
Anna Deaver is a true Patriot — one who excels in academics, is committed to her community, isn’t afraid to be in the spotlight or do the hard work behind the scenes, and dedicates herself to others and her faith. Over the past four years, she’s held leadership roles with the National Art Honors Society, National French Honors Society, Academic Team, Mock Trial, The Pinnacle and The Patriot, all while taking part in Model UN, SGA, Finance Club, Games Club, Volleyball and Track & Field. Anna’s passionate about the performing arts and held both cast and crew roles in seven John Carroll productions, including “Footloose: The Musical” earlier this spring. On top of that, she was a member of the Patriettes her Freshman and Sophomore years, followed by Bella Voce in her Junior year. A Carroll Scholar, Anna is also a Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Scholar with a long list of honor society inductions. But perhaps one of Anna’s most defining characteristics is her dedication to service and faith. Anna’s been heavily involved in Mission & Ministry at John Carroll, St. Stephen School and St. Stephen Church. She served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, Peer Minister, Junior Retreat Facilitator, Prayer & Pledge and Leadership Team at John Carroll.
Anna was accepted into the Landscape Architecture program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, with plans to continue to Texas A&M University for her Master's. Congratulations, Anna! We'll always be here supporting, praying and thinking of you!
Ryan Skandalis' academic achievement, combined with his commitment to community, service, sport and leadership, have earned him countless accolades. Ryan is a Carroll Scholar, getting ready to graduate with a Diploma with Distinction in Science and STEAM. He’s an eight-time Ben Carson Scholar, earning this honor every year since fifth grade. On top of that, Ryan is a John Carroll Alumni Children’s Scholarship recipient, Annie McGann Cumpston Memorial Scholarship recipient, National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Scholar, and is a nominee for the Al Cesky Award & Scholarship. He’s a straight-A student and member of several national honors societies. Ryan was also named an AP Scholar with Distinction for scores above 3.5 on at least five AP exams. Outside of the classroom, Ryan is heavily involved in sports as a tennis and soccer player. A three-year Varsity Soccer team captain, he's earned a spot on several All-Conference, All-County, All-Metro and All-State teams. Ryan served as the Class of 2023 SGA President for two years with involvement in Peer Ministry, FCA, Math Club, Sports Analytics Club, NHS Peer Tutoring and nationally ranked club soccer. Somehow, he still finds time to serve the less fortunate and underrepresented, primarily through VolunTeen. Ryan is the Vice President and Co-Founder, with over 300 hours given to the organization. A fun fact — VolunTeen has been recognized by the Governor’s Office, Lion’s Club of Bel Air, Harford County, Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles. ᴡʜᴇᴡ! You’ll probably find it hard to believe we couldn’t cover all his successes in this bio — the list was just too long!
Next year, Ryan will attend the Naval Academy as a member of the Mens Soccer team. Congratulations, Ryan!
