The John Carroll School, an independent, Catholic, college preparatory high school in Harford County announced the selection of Carl Patton as Principal and Chief Academic Officer effective July 1, 2021.
The announcement came following the comprehensive efforts of a search committee which considered input from faculty, staff, parents and alumni to help shape the selection criteria and profile for the new principal.
"Carl's experience, accomplishments and passion for Catholic education made him the unanimous choice for the position," according to John Carroll President Steve DiBiagio. "He is an experienced and innovative leader, and a champion of Catholic education who is aligned with John Carroll's mission, vision and values. We are blessed and fortunate to bring someone with his expertise and commitment to our school community."
Patton has more than 30 years experience in Catholic education. Since 2013, Patton has served as principal of Bishop O'Connell Catholic High School in Arlington, VA, a Catholic, coeducational high school with 1,200 students. There, he was instrumental in helping to grow enrollment and also developed a number of highly successful initiatives, including a "First Moment Initiative" to welcome new families; an expanded services inclusion model for students with intellectual and cognitive disabilities; and a nationally recognized professional development program. He has presented on these and other topics at national conferences for Catholic educators as well as at universities around the country.
Prior to Bishop O'Connell, Patton held leadership positions at Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School in Dumphries, VA and St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic School in Hyattsville. Other past roles include classroom teacher, department chair, and instructor and dean of students for Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth. Patton has also served as head or assistant coach for a number of middle and high school teams including baseball, softball and football.
Patton looks forward to joining the John Carroll team, saying, "The school's pervasive sense of inclusion and community, which lies at the heart of what the school is known for, is tremendously attractive for learners and educators alike. I am excited to join this talented team of educators as they ‘prepare students to positively influence a global society as critical thinkers and creative problem solvers while being socially responsible, spiritually centered, and morally grounded in our Catholic beliefs.'"
Patton holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland College Park and an MS in Education Administration from Trinity University in Washington, DC. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Education Leadership and Innovation through the University of Southern Mississippi. Patton and his family will relocate to the Bel Air area from their home in Chevy Chase.
Welcome to the Patriot family, Mr. Patton!
