Music Program

At The John Carroll School, we aim to help students develop their unique musical potential, to provide abundant and diverse opportunities for group and individualized music learning, to develop musical partnerships that reflect The John Carroll School's mission, and to cultivate a safe, respectful, inter-culturally responsive, and stimulating environment that supports student development.  

AUDITIONS for 2018-2019

The John Carroll School Music Department is proud to announce DEPARTMENT-WIDE AUDITIONS for the 2018-2019 School Year!

Auditions will be held for the following ensembles:

Bella Voce – JC’s mixed a cappella choir. Open to students in grades 9-12 by audition only. Bella Voce performs in a variety of styles including (but not limited to) Jazz, Broadway, Folk, Rock and Pop. The core curriculum explores basic vocal technique and music theory with solo, small ensemble and large ensemble performance opportunities. BV performs at the JC Winter, Spring and Memorial concerts as well as other school and community events. BV is a year-long, half-credit course that meets on Tuesday/Thursday (2:55-3:40 p.m.)

Jazz Band – Open to students in grades 9-12 by audition only. Jazz band is primarily comprised of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitar, piano, bass and drums, though accommodations can be made for additional instrumentation/vocalists. Jazz Band performs for the JC Winter, Spring and Memorial Concerts as well as the Cool Jazz Concert and other school and community events. Jazz Band is a year-long, half-credit course that meets on Monday/Wednesday (2:50-3:40 p.m.)

Rock Band – Open to students in grades 9-12 by audition only. Rock Band is primarily comprised of guitar, bass, piano, drums, and vocals. Students will learn basic music theory and performance skills as they pertain to Rock music. As a performance-based class, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work throughout the school year. Rock Band is a year-long, half-credit course that meets on Tuesday/Thursday (2:50-3:40 p.m.)

*These auditions are for honors placement only. Any student who sings or plays a band/orchestra instrument is welcome and encouraged to register for Band/Orchestra/Chorus without an audition.

Audition material (by group):

Bella Voce – Open to all students entering grades 9-12. Prepare a song that best showcases your voice. One verse/refrain only (approx. 16 bars); Song selection should be from the pop/jazz/broadway genre. Singers must sing without accompaniment – American Idol-style (a cappella). Admittance to BV is score-based. Singers’ scores include intonation (5pts.); commitment (5pts.); and a general/overall score (5pts.) – scores are also weighted by seniority (9-12pts.) and number of years of experience in BV x2 (2-6pts.)

Jazz Band – Open to all students entering grades 9-12 who play a jazz band instrument (See list, below.) Enrollment in concert band is strongly recommended for all Jazz Band members and will be taken into consideration when making Jazz Band acceptance decisions. Prepare a solo/excerpt that best showcases your abilities; this can be from an etude or method book for your instrument. Prepare the following scales: Bb, F, C, Eb (concert pitch, quarter notes). Rock Band – Open to all students entering grades 9-12 who play a rock band instrument (See list, below.) Prepare one song that showcases your abilities. Song should be from the rock/pop genre. Be prepared to play a C Major scale. A short sight-reading excerpt will also be provided.

                Rock Band instruments include: piano/keyboard, bass, guitar, drums, vocals (No scales requirement necessary for vocal auditions.)

Advanced Band – Open to all students entering grades 9-12 who intend to enroll in Band for the 2018-19 school year. Prepare a solo/excerpt that best showcases your abilities; this can be from an etude or method book for your instrument. Prepare the following scales: Bb, F, C, Eb (concert pitch, quarter notes). Advanced Orchestra – Open to all students entering grades 9-12 who intend to enroll in Orchestra for the 2018-19 school year. Prepare a solo that best showcases your abilities; Scale requirements are listed by instrument, below. A short sight-reading excerpt will also be provided.

Violins – D Major scale (2-octaves); G Major scale (2-octaves); E natural minor scale (1-octave)
Violas/Cellos – G Major scale (2-octaves); C Major scale (2-octaves); A natural minor scale (1-octave)
Basses – D Major scale (1-octave); G Major scale (1-octave); E natural minor scale (1-octave)

Advanced Chorus – Open to all students entering grades 9-12 who intend to enroll in Chorus for the 2018-19 school year. Prepare a solo that showcases your voice; Song selection should be classical/art song/standard Broadway ballad. You may bring recorded accompaniment or sheet music; accompanist will be provided. Singers will be asked to sing a short sight-reading excerpt and complete one aural skill (interval recognition) exercise, provided.

ENSEMBLES

BAND

Members of The John Carroll School Band will perform in the Marching Band and Concert Band.  The Marching Band performs at all home Varsity Football games, pep rally’s, and local parades.  The Concert Band performs for the John Carroll Christmas and Spring concerts, as well as other school assemblies. 

BELLA VOCE

Bella Voce is an auditioned a cappella group.  Bella Voce performs for the John Carroll Christmas and Spring concerts, other school assemblies, and for the community. 

CHORUS

Members of The John Carroll School Chorus will perform in a mixed voice chorus.  The Chorus performs for the John Carroll Christmas and Spring concerts, as well as other school assemblies. 

AUXILIARY UNITS (COLOR GUARD & TWIRLERS)

The Auxiliary Units are the visual art that accompany The John Carroll School Marching Band.  No previous experience is required.  Members of the Auxiliary Units will receive experience in spinning rifles, flags, and batons, as well as learn choreographed routines.  All Auxiliary members are required to attend band camp in August, to prepare for the upcoming marching band season.  The Auxiliary Units perform at all home Varsity Football games, pep rallies, and local parades.  All students are encouraged to join.  Color guard may also perform independently during the school year.”

JAZZ ENSEMBLE

The Jazz Ensemble performs various types of jazz, including big band, blues, swing and vocal jazz.  The Jazz Ensemble performs for the John Carroll Christmas and Spring concerts, other school assemblies, and for the community. 

ORCHESTRA

Members of The John Carroll School Orchestra will perform String Ensemble and Full Orchestra music.  The Orchestra performs for the John Carroll Christmas and Spring concerts, as well as other school assemblies. 

PEP BAND

The Pep Band performs for men’s and women’s home basketball games and pep rallies.  Members of the Pep Band will have opportunities to travel to Colleges and Universities to play during basketball championship games. 

PIT ORCHESTRA

The Pit Orchestra provides the music for the school's musical productions.  There are two productions a year, one in the fall and one in the spring.  

STRING QUARTET

The String Quartet is an auditioned group.  The String Quartet performs for the John Carroll Christmas and Spring concerts, other school assemblies, and for the community.

MUSIC PARENTS' CLUB

Mission Statement The purpose of the JC Music Parents' Club (referred to as MPC) is to actively support the music programs of The John Carroll School by encouraging parent, student, and community involvement and to foster greater school spirit and pride. The music program includes all instrumental groups, all chorus groups, and the Auxiliary Units.
