Patriots Gather Together to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther KingThursday, January 18, John Carroll students, faculty and staff gathered together in the upper gym for an assembly to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program was lead by students Qadir Ishmael, Kayla Kozak, Kiana Miller, Jayla Ferguson, Darrius lloyd, Myah Savage and Meg Sheehan who each spoke about King's life and his extraordinary role in the advancement of civil rights through nonviolent resistance. Select musical renditions followed each student's comments and included performances by John Carroll's Bella Voce, Chorus, Rock Band, Jazz Band, and performances by alumni Gabe Webster '16, Nicolette Ficca '16, Lily Stannard '16, and Brooke Vogel '16. Spiritual songs included: Go Down Moses; Go Tell it on the Mountain; Take the A Train; Johnny B. Goode; Feelin' Good; Glory; Blackbird; Oh, Happy Day; Get Up, Stand Up; and Lean on Me. Special guests - the Havre de Grace High School Women's Chorale - sang a reflection of I Shall Not be Moved, a spiritual protest song. Mr. Gary Scholl's concluding comments referenced the words of Saint Francis, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace," reminding us of how Martin Luther King was an instrument for change in our world.
