Hugh "Huffer" McGuirk '78 & Mary Long Wolfe '84 Named Rev. Charles K. Riepe Award Winners

Established in 1975, the Rev. Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and community service, and is the highest award given to a John Carroll alumna/us.

To better recognize the achievements of our ever-growing community of remarkable alumni, we're proud to share that the School will name two Rev. Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award winners each year — one to an male alumnus and one to a female alumna. This adjustment not only enables us to honor more of our distinguished graduates, but also aligns with our coeducational community and the format of our Black & Gold Awards, which celebrate the accomplishments of both girls and boys.

The John Carroll School Board of Trustees is thrilled to announce Hugh "Huffer" D. McGuirk '78 and Mary Long Wolfe '84 as the 2025 Rev. Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award winners! The commitment both Huffer and Mary have to bettering the world through professional and service endeavors is a true inspiration and embodies what it means to be a Patriot. They will be honored at a special reception at the School with family and friends on May 23 and recognized at the Class of 2025 Commencement on May 24.

Hugh "Huffer" McGuirk '78

While a student at The John Carroll School, Hugh "Huffer" McGuirk '78 was rarely idle and always fully immersed in the campus and student activities. He was an active and talented student-athlete as a member of the Football, Basketball, Baseball and Tennis teams.

Following graduation, Huffer continued to pursue his education at the University of Virginia, earning a degree in Applied Mathematics with minors in Computer Science and Economics. He later studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and was awarded a Master of Business Administration.

Throughout his career in the financial services sector, Huffer dedicated over three decades to T. Rowe Price & Associates, Inc. and retired in 2022 as Head of Municipals. His primary focus has been on guiding individuals and institutions in achieving their financial goals and allowing them to give back to their respective communities.

Huffer's commitment to community extends beyond his professional endeavors, as he has actively engaged in various non-profit organizations for many years. He's a Founding Board Member of the Friends of Baltimore County Cats and currently serves as treasurer of SquashWise, a non-profit that partners with Baltimore’s youth and families to advance equity in squash, education and personal development opportunities. The organization is a dedicated agent of change providing a place where all students can reach their educational, academic, athletic and life goals.

His unwavering support for The John Carroll School is evident in his roles as a loyal donor, trusted advisor and member of the Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2000. His uninterrupted legacy of giving is a model of philanthropy and steadfast confidence in the mission of the School. He has been a bedrock of encouragement as well as a challenging force for excellence and achievement at John Carroll.

Mary Long Wolfe ’84

As a student, Mary Long Wolfe ’84 played Field Hockey and Lacrosse, was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a page in the Maryland State Senate, was awarded the School Spirit Award and demonstrated a strong commitment to the community through her myriad volunteer roles both at John Carroll and in 4-H.

Mary pursued a degree in English Literature at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1988. The following year, she embarked on an adventure teaching in a village high school in Kenya through WorldTeach. Mary fostered many connections between John Carroll and her Kenyan students. Despite limited resources and with the help of the John Carroll community, she managed to create a library and purchase a microscope for her Kenyan school, as well as facilitate penpal exchanges with John Carroll students. Realizing that many people in the John Carroll and Bel Air community were supporting her, Mary wrote a newsletter, which she sent via airmail letters to her parents who shared it with the community, providing a glimpse into life in a village without running water and electricity — an early, pre-digital dive into the world of blogging!

Seeking new horizons, Mary relocated to San Francisco. Capitalizing on her English degree and willingness to challenge herself, she accepted a position as product manager with a software startup that created the first online grammar checker. Having found a career that tapped into her passion for problem-solving, creativity and deep customer understanding, Mary spent the next 15+ years working in and consulting for various startups, building world class software products and websites. During this time, Mary felt a growing desire to give back, which led her to volunteer and become a small-scale donor at a local family shelter. This marked the beginning of her foray into nonprofit board membership and leadership, where she leveraged her professional skills to contribute strategically, fundraise and steward donors. Mary currently serves on the boards of 10,000 Degrees, a leading educational nonprofit focused on supporting low-income and first-generation students to and through college, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco. She continues to embody the values instilled by her parents and the School, focusing on creating community, giving generously and learning from everyone she encounters.

Mary's unwavering commitment to John Carroll has only grown stronger over the years, fueling her efforts to maintain and strengthen the bonds formed during her high school years. Driven by her deep appreciation for her alma mater, Mary has given her time and treasure to ensure future generations of Patriots thrive and that the Class of 1984's legacy endures. By reconnecting alumni, reigniting school spirit and fostering unity within the John Carroll community, she has become a shining example of Patriot Pride. With her brother, Dr. Peter Long '85, also a Rev. Charles K. Riepe Alumni Award recipient, it’s evident this deep-rooted commitment to John Carroll runs in the family and honors the legacy of their father, long-time Vice Principal, Mr. Jim Long.

Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award

Congratulations to Zach Barker '08, the 2025 recipient of the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award! This award is presented to an alumnus/alumna who graduated in the past 20 years and whose achievements and contributions have positively impacted his/her profession, community and John Carroll.

Zach, inspired by former Science Department faculty member and environmentalist Mr. John Hughes, is a landscape architect focused on creating sustainable, resilient outdoor spaces that align with Pope Francis' vision of "care for our common home." His career includes award-winning designs, such as a playground at a Philadelphia library and a stormwater facility under a football field in Auckland. Emigrating to New Zealand in 2018, Zach worked at Isthmus, contributing to diverse projects like green corridors and animal enclosures. His designs emphasize working with nature, social responsibility and long-term environmental impact, earning recognition such as the Environmental Sustainability Award from Water New Zealand. He is married to fellow alumna, Maddie (Bergeron) Barker '08.

Patriot Service Award

This award is presented to an alum who has given back significantly to The John Carroll School through their time, talent and/or treasure. This individual embodies the John Carroll promise to instill in all of our students a strong sense of self; the capacity to achieve their personal fulfillment and professional aspirations; a global perspective; and a strong, moral compass.

Rebekah (Jewett) Keck '05 has dedicated her life to service, both as a volunteer and career. After high school, she joined the Level Volunteer Fire Company and became an EMT, answering countless calls and assisting hundreds of patients. She served as EMS Lieutenant and Captain, and has been recognized as a top responder. She also contributes to fundraising efforts and inspired her son to join as a cadet. Professionally, she works as an EMT for the Harford County Department of Emergency Services. Her compassion exemplifies the values taught at John Carroll, and her ongoing service connects her to a supportive fire service family.
