Student Spotlight
May 23, 2024

The most prestigious award issued to one male and one female Senior, the Black & Gold Award recognizes students who are consistently compelling in their accomplishments, thoughtful and considerate toward others, and uncompromising in their commitment to being a model of excellence and force for good. We're proud to share that Kinley Boyle '24 and Andrew Kelly '24 are this year's recipients!

Congratulations to all of our outstanding nominees — Christopher Artz, Kinley Boyle, Lauren Gallagher, Drew Kelly, Brady Larkin, Al Riska, Mia Snellenburg and Ben Shutt.

Kinley Boyle

Kinley, a Carroll Scholar, will graduate with a Fine Arts Diploma with Distinction as well as an AP Capstone Diploma. She’s been named an AP Scholar with Honor (awarded to those who average a score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken) and earned an AP Seminar & Research Certificate (awarded to those who score 3 or higher on both AP Seminar and AP Research). Her academic resume doesn’t end there, as she is member to a very lengthy list of honor societies, ranging from National Honors Society to the National Spanish Honors Society, among others.

Outside of the classroom, Kinley spends much of her free time giving back. She’s shared her love for black and gold with Patriots past, present and future as a student ambassador for countless admissions, community and alumni events. Kinley is a member of the first-ever Girls Varsity Golf Team and proud 2023 IAAM B Conference Champion. This season, she and her team defended their title and brought home another IAAM Championship trophy!

For those of us on campus every day, we all know and recognize Kinley’s voice! She, along with fellow nominee Drew Kelly, are the Patriots that mark the beginning and end of each day at The John Carroll School over announcements. Next year, she heads to the College of Charleston’s Honors College.

Drew Kelly

Drew is a Peer Minister and Senior Leader, and assists with Mass at John Carroll. He’s a member of the National Service Honor Society, with many of his service hours committed to teaching Confirmation classes at St. Margaret Church, the Joshua Hamer Memorial Tournament, the Festival of Lights, and serving as a guide for Lessons of the Shoah. He’s also an active member of the Black Student Union and Weightlifting Club. Not only that, Drew is the voice that ends each day at John Carroll with the closing prayer and announcements!

When Drew isn’t helping the community, you can find him at Kutcher Stadium! He’s been a member of the Baseball team throughout his four years at John Carroll and was awarded the Unsung Hero Award his Junior year and the Kutcher Academic Excellence Award as a Senior. Speaking of academic excellence, Drew finds a way to achieve in the classroom as well. He consistently earns First Honors each quarter and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society.

Drew will study electrical engineering and political science at the University of Maryland in the Honors College. He has aspirations of creating a start-up with his cohorts he meets along the way, or joining a company where he can make a meaningful impact on society through technology.
