Three Patriots Ordained Deacons, Celebrate First Mass at John Carroll
We're proud to share that on September 30, Director of Mission & Ministry Ken Goedeke, along with Dan Webster '81, Brian Olsen '90 and 11 others, was ordained Deacon by Archbishop Lori at Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.
As deacons, they will proclaim the Gospel at Mass, preach homilies, assist at the altar, lead general intercessions and distribute Communion in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Baltimore. They will administer the sacrament of baptism, witness marriages and preside at rites of Christian burial. The clergymen will also minister in the wider community at hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and other institutions.
Archbishop Lori appointed Deacon Goedeke to diaconal ministry here at The John Carroll School, as well as St. Patrick Parish in Havre de Grace. For Deacon Goedeke, this means he will serve on the weekends and some evenings at St. Patrick, while remaining the full-time Director of Mission & Ministry at John Carroll. Each morning, he will pray Liturgy of the Hours Morning Prayer in the St. Jude Chapel for our community, something he publicly promised on the morning of his ordination.
In lieu of gifts, Deacon Goedeke requests donations in support of enhancements to the St. Jude Chapel at The John Carroll School.
Mass of Thanksgiving
Newly ordained deacons and priests celebrate “first Masses” following their ordinations within the communities they have lived and served previously. The Mass of Thanksgiving, held at John Carroll on October 6, was a “homecoming” for Deacons Goedeke, Webster and Olsen. If you weren't able to tune in live, you can watch the recording on our YouTube page.
